Podgora

About the destination

Since ancient times known as a fishing village, Podgora has developed into one of the most picturesque destinations on the Makarska Riviera.

Along with the beauty of the town itself, its beaches, and tourist offerings, Podgora also prides itself on its special connection with Biokovo. Here begins a thirty-kilometer-long ascent to the 1762-meter-high peak of the mountain, St. Jure, and Podgora is a logical starting point for visiting the Biokovo Nature Park. From the slopes above the town, through olive groves and traditional houses, there is an unparalleled view of Hvar and Pelješac, and if you climb even higher, the view extends much further – across the sea towards Italy.

One of the symbols of Podgora, besides its hotels, beaches, and numerous tourist facilities, is the monumental monument of the Wings of Seagulls, which welcomes you when you arrive in Podgora from the direction of Makarska.

Hmm?
Saint Vicenzo is the patron saint of the town of Podgora. Details about his life are not known, except that he was a Roman soldier and that he preferred to lay down his life rather than betray his conscience, character, and fidelity to Christ the Savior. The story begins in 1790 when Pope Pius VI gifted the bones of Saint Vicenzo to Makarska canon Ivan Josip Pavlović. After his death, his brother canon, Don Grgur Pavlović, further gifted the bones to his colleague Don Lovro Pavlinović in Podgora, to the Church of All Saints. This happened in 1831, and since then, it has been the final resting place of Saint Vicenzo.
