The mountain of Biokovo, one of the celebrated coastal Dalmatian mountains, is not just a geographical entity. Its monumentality lends character and identity to the entire broader region on both sides of its peaks. Viewed from the sea, Biokovo rises almost vertically from the coastline to the dizzying height of 1762 meters above sea level, which is the elevation of its highest peak, Sveti Jure.
In addition to its beauty, monumentality, and fame, Biokovo is an exceptionally valuable area full of natural attractions, cultural and historical heritage, and rare geomorphological features. The sheer height of the mountain makes it a perfect vantage point from whose peaks one can enjoy magnificent views of the wider seascape and island panorama of this part of Dalmatia, extending in good weather conditions all the way to Cape Monte Gargano in Italy. Similarly, from the peaks of Biokovo, especially from the highest one - Sveti Jure, accessible via the highest road in Croatia, one can see the distant peaks of the mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The biological diversity and geomorphological features of Biokovo have been protected since the establishment of the Nature Park in 1981, and the park itself ranks among the most valuable tourist attractions in the entire region. The exceptionally rich natural and cultural heritage, numerous ancient religious buildings, and well-maintained hiking and mountaineering trails are complemented by numerous opportunities to enjoy various forms of active tourism. Within the Nature Park and Biokovo itself, visitors can hike, climb its cliffs, cycle, or paraglide. All of these activities are located just a few kilometers away from a range of developed and popular summer tourist destinations, making the beauty of this mountain easily accessible to a large number of tourists.
