Educational trail: French road

About the attraction

The French Road educational trail represents an exceptional example of architectural craftsmanship from the early 19th century. The road was built from 1810 to 1811 on the demanding terrain of the slopes of Mt. Biokovo and though it remained unfinished, the stages of its construction are clearly visible. It bears the name "French" because at that time, during the Napoleonic Wars, this part of Croatia was under French rule as part of the Illyrian provinces of the French Empire. The road was designed by Frane Zavoreo, and was intended for carriages, horseback riding and walking.

Along the road, interpretation boards have been installed to explain the purpose and method of construction of this special road. Enjoy the stunning panoramic views of Brela, the Makarska Riviera and the surrounding islands along the road.

Although this is considered an easy route, it is still a mountain path, which should be taken into account when preparing and choosing the necessary equipment, clothing and footwear.

Did you know? During their rule in these regions (1808–1813), the French built this road along the length of Dalmatia, known as "Napoleon's road" or the "French road". The part of this road followed by this hiking route was supposed to connect the Makarska Riviera with the long road that passed through Zabiokovlje, the inland area of Mt. Biokovo. Unfortunately, with the withdrawal of the French army from Dalmatia, the road was not completed, but the valuable remains of dry stone walls are still visible.

The "French Road" route is an exceptional example of road construction and was included in the Register of Cultural Properties of the Republic of Croatia on 25 September 2017.
