Trekking/Junction model
If you skip Biokovo along its eastern slopes, you will reach the historical city of Vrgorac. Beneath Vrgorac, extending in a southeasterly direction and connecting it with the area of the town of Ploče, is the Vrgorsko Polje field, better known as the Polje Jezero field.
This fertile green field and Croatia’s largest vine-growing region was created by drying out aformer lake to create agricultural lands inanotherwise rocky karst landscape. This was madepossible by construction of a tunnel towards theBaćina Lakes abovePloče,and the deepconnection of this landscape with water is seen in the winding Matica River that flows throughthe field, flooding partsof it in spring, especially at the far southern edge of the field
This dynamic, flat landscape with countless well beaten field paths has been turned into a truecyclist trekking heaven for those who enjoy a lighter ridethrough labyrinths of vineyards, orchards, rockyhills of the former lake islands, and the winding course of the river.
The routes were designed based on the junction model, meaning that the entire field isinterlaced with beautifully and sustainably designed road signs that enable youto pick andchoose among the segments to shape your very own route, depending on how many kilometresyou want to ride and what you want to see (or taste)
In this case, this trekking heaven is accompanied by wealth of content, culinary above all. Thereare numerous family farms and keep in mind that this is Croatia’s largest wine-growing region, and the homeland of the widely renowned Vrgorac prosciutto
